Big Steam Print

Rebecca Smith

Following the excitement of successful crowd funding the Ditchling museum of Art + Craft’s Big Steam Print project, the first event at Amberley Museum & Heritage Centre in West Sussex was a roaring success. You may have heard about (or even supported) this outrageous plan to take a 12.5-tonne vintage steamroller on a printing tour, creating massive works of art with artists, students and young people. The creative participants at Amberley included a mix of familiar names and budding future artists. Frances Emerald chose the Art Deco building Marine Court from her hometown of St Leonards-on-Sea as the subject matter for her lino-cut, with stunning results. Johnny Hannah had been commissioned to design the front covers for Viva Lewes & Viva Brighton and, as you’d expect from this much-loved artist, produced two beautiful pieces of work. Other talented participants included Southampton Solent University and Red Hot Press, Claire Perkins, and Rocket Artists, as well local secondary schools and Brownie packs.

If you missed Amberley and would like to catch up with more inky goodness on a large-scale, the Big Steam Print will be rumbling on at the following venues:

  • 23-24 April (11am-3pm): London Transport Museum Acton Depot
  • 22 May (12-5pm): The Level, Brighton
  • 18 June (12-5pm): Ditchling Village Fair
