Contemporary Pearl Jewellery - The Modern Take on a Timeless Classic

Rebecca Smith

Pearl and diamond drop studsContemporary pearl jewellery is a favourite addition to our collections. We love to work with a variety of different pearls, among the types of pearls we stock are: Akoya pearls from Japan which look excellent in contemporary pearl rings; exotic freshwater baroque pearls and unusual keshi pearls which are perfect for unusual pearl necklaces; and mabe pearls such as the stunning example in our mabe pearl cuff. We can also supply Tahitian and South Sea Pearls.

Pearls have a rich history in jewellery and fashion, stretching back thousands of years and transcending cultures. Their trend in fashion may have risen and fallen to an extent, though due to their inherent beauty they have never been far from the consciousness of either the jeweller or the jewellery enthusiast. Currently, pearls are on a high – whether this is partly down to the current popularity of the ‘vintage’ look, statement pieces, or new trends being set my style icons such as The Duchess of Cambridge and Michelle Obama, we are glad they’re so strongly in vogue as we love working with them! Pearls have made top billing at a number of recent high profile auctions and events. For example, Elizabeth Taylors pearl necklace containing a world famous pearl known as ‘la Peregrina’ made worldwide headlines when it sold for over £7million at Christies in New York, and Alexander McQueens AW13 collection featured ornate headpieces with a twist on the Tudor style. A recent high profile exhibition of pearls in their many varieties and their use as adornment has recently wowed sell out crowds at London’s V&A museum. From the stars of the contemporary music charts modelling pearls for major fashion houses and screen stars in classic period dramas such as Downton Abbey or The Great Gatsby, the versatility of the pearl to adorn a wide spectrum of wardrobes is in full evidence.

At Pruden and Smith we always have a range of fabulous pearl jewellery in stock designed by Rebecca Smith, though are equally able to advise on commissioning pearl jewellery and source pearls from specialists to match your requirements should you want to create a bespoke item. In addition (and on top of providing a full restringing, cleaning and reknotting service) we can reuse your existing pearls within new and updated designs to make the most of the wonderful natural treasures.
