Choosing Sapphire Jewellery

Sapphire is prized for two reasons: its colour and its toughness. After diamond it's one of the hardest gemstones, which makes it superb for everyday rings and pieces meant to last a lifetime. While the classic deep blue is most famous, sapphire also occurs in yellow, pink, green and multi-coloured 'rainbow' and peacock combinations — all of which feature in our handmade collection.

Prices start at around £130 for a rough-sapphire silver design and rise to several thousand pounds for diamond-set engagement and cocktail rings, with pieces across rings, stud and drop earrings, necklaces, pendants and bracelets in silver, 9ct and 18ct gold and platinum.

As September's birthstone and the gem of the 45th wedding anniversary, sapphire is a popular choice for milestone gifts and engagement rings alike. Because everything is handmade at our Sussex workshop, we can set a particular sapphire, work with a stone you already own, or design something bespoke. Gold and platinum pieces carry a 10- and 20-year guarantee with free re-polishing for life.

Frequently Asked Questions

What colours does sapphire come in?

Most people picture a deep blue, but sapphire occurs in almost every colour — yellow, pink, green, violet and multi-coloured 'rainbow' and peacock combinations. Only red corundum is called a ruby; every other colour is a sapphire. Our collection includes both classic blue and a range of fancy-coloured stones.

Is sapphire hard-wearing enough for everyday rings?

Yes. Sapphire is one of the hardest gemstones — second only to diamond among the stones we use — so it resists scratches and everyday knocks very well. That makes it an excellent and practical choice for engagement rings and rings worn daily.

Is sapphire a birthstone?

Sapphire is the birthstone for September and the gemstone traditionally given for a 45th wedding anniversary, which makes it a popular and meaningful choice for milestone gifts.

Can you make a bespoke sapphire ring or set my own stone?

Absolutely. We can design a bespoke sapphire piece, source a particular colour or size of stone, or set a sapphire you already own, all handmade at our Ditchling workshop. Gold and platinum pieces carry a 10- and 20-year guarantee with free re-polishing for life.
