Choosing a Plain Ring or Wedding Band

A plain ring — most often a wedding band — relies on the quality of the metal and the finish rather than stones. That makes the craftsmanship matter all the more, and ours are handmade at the bench in Ditchling in a range of profiles and textures, from polished court bands to bold hammered and reticulated designs.

Prices start at around £580 and rise to £3,800 for wide gold and platinum designs, with most falling between £740 and £2,200. Choose from court, flat and D-shape profiles, hammered, matt, polished and reticulated finishes, and two-colour and mixed-metal designs, in 9ct and 18ct gold and platinum, for both him and her.

The right band comes down to width, profile and finish — a court profile is the most comfortable for everyday wear. Because everything is handmade we can match a pair, add engraving, or design something bespoke. Gold carries a 10-year guarantee, platinum 20, with free re-polishing for life.

Frequently Asked Questions

What metal is best for a plain wedding band?

It comes down to colour, durability and budget. Platinum is the hardest-wearing and naturally white; 18ct gold has a rich colour and high gold content; 9ct gold is harder and more affordable. We can make most bands in any of these, in yellow, white or rose.

What ring profile is most comfortable?

A 'court' profile — gently rounded on both the outside and the inside — is the most popular for everyday comfort. Flat and D-shape profiles give a more contemporary look. We're happy to talk you through the options and the right width for your hand.

Can you engrave a plain wedding band?

Yes. We can hand-engrave a message, date or initials inside (or outside) a plain band — a lovely personal touch for a wedding ring. Just let us know what you'd like.

Can you make a bespoke plain ring or matching pair?

Absolutely. We can make matching his-and-hers bands, vary the width and finish, or design something bespoke at our Sussex workshop. Gold carries a 10-year guarantee, platinum 20, with free re-polishing for life.
