Choosing a Side Stone Engagement Ring

A side stone engagement ring frames a central diamond or gemstone with smaller accent stones set along the shoulders of the band. The extra stones add sparkle, make the centre stone appear larger, and give the ring a real sense of width and presence — which is why side stone and shoulder-set designs are among the most enduring of all engagement styles.

This collection spans several looks. Trilogy and trefoil rings group three stones together, often read as past, present and future. Art Deco seven-diamond designs step the side stones down in size for a geometric, vintage feel. Hidden halo and claw-set styles tuck accent diamonds close to the centre for understated sparkle. Centre stones range from round brilliant and oval to marquise, pear, emerald and princess cuts, in diamond or colour stones such as sapphire.

Prices range from around £1,600 to £10,000, with most designs between £2,200 and £4,800. Every ring is handmade by our goldsmiths in Ditchling, Sussex, in platinum or gold, and most can be tailored — a different centre stone, carat weight or metal — as a bespoke commission. Each engagement ring is covered by our lifetime guarantee on the piece as supplied, with complimentary cleaning and re-polishing for life.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a side stone engagement ring?

A side stone engagement ring has a central diamond or gemstone flanked by smaller accent stones set on the shoulders of the band. The side stones add sparkle, make the centre stone look larger, and give the ring extra presence. Designs range from three-stone trilogies to Art Deco rows of graduated diamonds.

What's the difference between a side stone and a trilogy (three stone) engagement ring?

A trilogy, or three stone, ring is one type of side stone ring: a centre stone with one matching stone on each side, often read as past, present and future. Other side stone designs use several smaller accent diamonds along the shoulders, or a hidden halo, to frame the centre stone more subtly. All trilogies are side stone rings, but not all side stone rings are trilogies.

Can I choose the centre stone and metal?

Yes. Most of our side stone designs can be made to order with your choice of centre stone — diamond or coloured gemstone, in a range of cuts and carat weights — and in platinum or 18ct gold. Tell us what you have in mind and we'll prepare a design and a quote as a bespoke commission.

Are your engagement rings guaranteed?

Every engagement ring is handmade at our bench in Ditchling, Sussex, and covered by our lifetime guarantee on the ring as supplied, including complimentary cleaning and re-polishing for life. We can also resize and care for your ring over the years.
