Choosing Black Onyx Jewellery
Prices start at around £120 for a pair of druzy studs and rise to around £1,500 for silver stacking-ring sets, with pendants, bracelets and dress rings in between, mostly between £140 and £550. Pieces are set in sterling silver and gold, alongside related black spinel designs.
Black onyx is traditionally associated with strength and protection, and is the gemstone linked to a 7th wedding anniversary. As a form of quartz it's hard-wearing and easy to live with, and because everything is handmade at our Sussex workshop we can adjust a design or create something bespoke. Gold pieces carry a 10-year guarantee and silver a 2-year guarantee, with free re-polishing for life.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is black onyx?
Black onyx is a deep, solid-black variety of chalcedony — a form of quartz. Smooth and lustrous when polished, it's also found here in a 'druzy' form, where a layer of tiny sparkling crystals gives the stone real sparkle. It's a hard-wearing, versatile stone for bold, modern designs.
What is druzy onyx?
Druzy (or drusy) onyx has a surface of fine, glittering crystals rather than a flat polish, so it catches the light like a scattering of tiny diamonds. Many of our black onyx pieces use this druzy finish for extra sparkle and texture.
Is black onyx hard-wearing?
Yes. As a form of quartz, black onyx is reasonably hard and stands up well to everyday wear in rings, pendants and earrings. We'd suggest avoiding harsh chemicals, and we're happy to clean and re-polish any piece we've made.
Can you make bespoke black onyx jewellery?
Absolutely. We can design a bespoke onyx piece or adapt one of our styles, handmade at our Sussex workshop. Gold pieces carry a 10-year guarantee and silver 2 years, with free re-polishing for life.
