At Pruden and Smith, we bring together generations of handmade skill and design, creating wedding rings with a character and depth you simply won’t find in mass-made, imported pieces. Every ring is crafted in our village workshop in England, shaped by hand, and finished with care.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about choosing your wedding ring, from finding the right size, to understanding metals, profiles, and finishes, to creating the perfect stack with your engagement ring, whether that’s a wed-fit design or a beautifully shaped band made just for you.
Ring Sizing
Ring sizing doesn’t need to be daunting. Before we dive in, it’s worth knowing that even if your size is slightly off, every Pruden and Smith ring comes with a complimentary resize. We also offer a free ring sizer, sent to your home, so you can measure comfortably in your own time. If you’re local to one of our workshops, you’re very welcome to pop in and we’ll size you in person.
It’s helpful to remember that ring size can fluctuate by up to a size depending on temperature, your body, and even the time of day, fingers tend to be slightly smaller when cold and larger when warm. Over a lifetime, hands change too, through work, pregnancy, or simply time. Your ring can evolve with you, and we’re always here to help keep it fitting beautifully.
The Metals
Platinum & Silver Platinum and silver are the only precious metals that are naturally white. Platinum, in particular, is prized for its strength and longevity, making it a wonderful choice for a ring you’ll wear every day.
Gold Gold comes in a variety of colours. Yellow gold is its natural form, but by blending it with other precious metals we can create tones such as white gold and rose gold, each with their own character.
The carat tells you how much pure gold is present in the alloy:
24ct – 100% pure gold
22ct – 91.6% pure gold
18ct – 75% pure gold
14ct – 58.5% pure gold
9ct – 37.5% pure gold
We don’t work in 24ct gold, as it is too soft for jewellery designed to be worn every day. If you’re drawn to a purer gold than 18ct, we can create bespoke pieces in 22ct, which offers that rich, traditional colour with a little added strength. Across our core collections, however, you’ll find we work primarily in 18ct and 9ct, chosen for their balance of beauty, durability, and suitability for everyday wear.
White gold is typically blended with palladium or similar white metals to give it its cool tone, while rose gold is blended with copper to create its warm, blush hue.
Each metal has its own weight, feel, and personality, and we’re always happy to help you choose what best suits your lifestyle and aesthetic.
Width
From fine, delicate bands to bolder, chunkier styles, width is all about personal taste. It’s the measurement from top to bottom when you look at your hand. A narrower band feels subtle and refined, wha wider band makes a stronger visual statement.
It’s also worth thinking about how you use your hands day to day. If you’re very hands-on, work physically, garden, or spend a lot of time at the gym, a slightly wider or more substantial ring can feel more reassuring, while finer bands suit those who love a lighter, barely-there feel.
Profiles & Shapes
Wed-Fit Wedding Rings
A wed-fit engagement ring is designed so the diamond sits high enough to allow a wedding ring to sit flush alongside it, without needing to have a curve or shape in it, creating a seamless stack.
Curved & Shaped
A shaped wedding ring is made to follow the exact outline of your engagement ring. Even if your ring isn’t wed-fit, a curved band allows you to achieve a perfect, flush stack.
Court
A court profile has rounded top and a gentle curve on the inside, making it exceptionally comfortable, while still feeling substantial.
Flat
A flat profile is defined by its crisp, 90-degree edges and clean, modern lines. However, we always soften the inside of the ring with a gentle curve, known as a court fit, so it feels comfortable for everyday wear. True 90-degree edges can be surprisingly unforgiving on the hand, so this subtle shaping ensures your ring looks beautifully sharp on the outside, while feeling smooth and natural to wear all day.
Beaded
A fine row of tiny beads along the edge of the ring, adding delicate detail and a vintage feel.
Finishes
Bright Polished A high-shine, mirror-like finish that reflects light beautifully.
Satin Matt Created by gently brushing the surface, producing a soft, understated matt sheen.
Signature Styles
Side Hammered
A Pruden and Smith signature, designed by Rebecca, this creates an undulating edge and a softly concave top surface. Each ring is individually hammered by hand, making every piece unique.
Rough Hammered
Lightly hammered with a combination of tools, giving the ring the look of natural, lived-in wear, with subtle marks and character.
Textured
Our textured finishes are created through specialist hand processes, giving the surface depth, movement, and individuality.
Peened
Using a rounded hammer, we create small concave impressions across the surface, resulting in a softly dimpled texture.
Flat Hammered
Formed with a flat hammer, leaving vertical hammered marks for a bold, tactile finish.
Diamond & Gemstone Set
Diamonds or gemstones can be set into your ring using rub-over settings or delicate claws, adding subtle sparkle or colour.
Hand Engraved
Engraving adds another layer of meaning, whether it’s a date, a phrase, or a decorative pattern worked by hand.
A Few Final Thoughts
Your wedding rings don’t have to match. Many couples choose different metals, widths, or finishes, reflecting their own individual styles, while still feeling beautifully connected.
All of our wedding rings are made to order in our workshop, allowing time for careful crafting, shaping, and finishing, especially when a ring is curved to fit an engagement ring perfectly.
And if you have existing jewellery, we can often remodel or recycle your own gold into your new rings, letting something meaningful become part of the next chapter.
